CLOUD ATLAS:
A CASE STUDY IN NEGOTIATING NARRATIVE STORYTELLING AND CINEMATIC DESIGN

The study of adaptation is a study of the back and forth negotiation between the literary and the cinematic. Considerations that affect film adaptations include nature of the source text, reasons for the adaptation, culture of the receptive audience, unique properties to the mediums they are adapted to and from, financial and labour costs, and expectation to appeal to the masses.

This book presents how writer-directors Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski (now known as Lilly Wachowski) balance narrative storytelling and cinematic design to re-interpret the highly complex Cloud Atlas (2004) novel by author David Mitchell, into a coherent and entertaining piece of cinema.

This publication was designed as a 18-page accordion-fold book with interactive inserts.
